Insect screening is widely used in windows, doors and corridors to keep mosquitoes, flies and other insects out while letting air and light through. Standard specifications are 14x14, 16x14, 16x16, 18x14 and 18x18 mesh, with wire diameter generally BWG 31 or BWG 32 — fine enough to disappear visually at a few paces, tight enough to stop biting insects.

Characteristics and Use
Good screening is light, has good tenacity and rust resistance, ventilates well and cleans easily. It serves as insect protection in hotels, public buildings and residential houses. Window and door screens are also a recognized public-health measure: the U.S. EPA's mosquito control guidance lists installing and repairing window and door screens among the first steps for keeping mosquitoes out of the home. Choosing a Screen Material
Galvanized or epoxy-coated steel is economical and stiff, good for fixed frames. Aluminum alloy resists corrosion without coating and stays bright. Fiberglass and plastic are soft, kink-free and the easiest for roll-form replacement screens. Stainless steel outlasts them all in coastal and commercial service. Mesh count choice is a airflow-versus-exclusion trade: 14x14 maximizes ventilation; 18x18 excludes smaller insects.
